While vaccination and biosecurity are the primary tools for prevention, nutritional support plays an important role in recovery and in maintaining flock health during outbreaks. I’ve worked with farms that went through AI outbreaks, and the supplement protocols that helped surviving birds recover made a meaningful difference in overall losses.

The Challenge of Avian Influenza

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) causes severe systemic disease with high mortality. The virus affects multiple organ systems, including the respiratory tract, kidneys, and immune system. Birds that survive the acute phase often face secondary infections and prolonged recovery.

The nutritional approach focuses on three areas:

  • Supporting immune function to help the bird clear the virus
  • Maintaining organ function, particularly kidneys and liver
  • Preventing secondary bacterial infections
  • Speeding recovery of feed intake and egg production

Vitamin and Mineral Support

During an AI outbreak, the bird’s demand for vitamins and minerals increases dramatically. I recommend increasing supplementation levels significantly for surviving and at-risk birds.

Vitamin A at 20,000-25,000 IU/kg supports respiratory epithelial integrity. The respiratory tract is the primary entry point for AI, and maintaining healthy mucosal barriers reduces viral entry and secondary bacterial infections.

Vitamin C in water at 1-2 g/L is essential because endogenous synthesis cannot meet demand during severe disease stress. In my experience, vitamin C supplementation reduces mortality in the acute phase by supporting adrenal function and reducing oxidative damage.

Vitamin E at 300-500 IU/kg supports antibody production and reduces inflammatory damage. This is particularly important during recovery when the bird is rebuilding immune function.

Zinc (organic sources at 120-150 ppm) supports immune cell function. Zinc deficiency impairs T-cell and B-cell responses, which are essential for clearing viral infection.

Electrolyte and Hydration Support

Avian influenza often causes kidney damage and electrolyte imbalance. Maintaining hydration and electrolyte balance is critical for survival.

A balanced electrolyte solution in drinking water containing sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate helps maintain acid-base balance. I recommend:

  • Days 1-5: Full electrolyte support at 2-3 g/L drinking water
  • Days 6-10: Half-strength electrolyte support
  • Days 11+: Monitor and supplement as needed

Potassium levels are particularly important during AI because kidney damage can cause potassium wasting. Added potassium bicarbonate at 1-2 kg/ton of feed helps maintain normal potassium levels.

Immune-Modulating Supplements

Several supplements have shown specific benefits for viral disease recovery:

Beta-glucans from yeast cell walls stimulate macrophage activity. In AI challenge studies, beta-glucan supplementation improved survival rates and reduced viral shedding.

Astragalus polysaccharides have been studied in traditional medicine for viral disease support. In poultry trials, Astragalus supplementation improved immune responses to viral vaccines and challenge.

Spirulina and algae products provide immune-supporting compounds including phycocyanin and polysaccharides. In my experience, these are helpful during recovery but too slow-acting to be useful in the acute phase.

Understanding Limitations

I need to be clear: supplements do not treat or cure avian influenza. In a confirmed HPAI outbreak, depopulation is often required by regulation. These protocols are for:

  • Supporting birds in non-regulated situations where recovery is possible
  • Reducing the impact of lower-pathogenicity AI strains
  • Supporting flocks that have been vaccinated against AI
  • General immune support during periods of high risk

Practical Protocol for AI Risk Periods

Based on field experience, here is a practical supplement protocol for flocks during AI risk periods or early-stage outbreaks:

Prevention phase (when risk is elevated):

  • Vitamin E at 300 IU/kg + selenium at 0.4 ppm
  • Vitamin A at 15,000 IU/kg
  • Beta-glucans at 500 g/ton
  • Organic zinc at 120 ppm
  • Probiotics for general immune support

Acute phase (when clinical signs appear):

  • Vitamin C in water at 1-2 g/L
  • Full electrolyte support in water
  • Increase vitamin E to 500 IU/kg
  • Vitamin A to 25,000 IU/kg

Recovery phase (7-14 days after acute phase):

  • Gradual reduction of vitamin C to 500 mg/L water
  • Continue electrolytes at half strength for 7 days
  • Maintain increased vitamin E and selenium for 14 days
  • Add probiotics to help rebuild gut microbiome

Summary

Supplement support during avian influenza outbreaks does not replace biosecurity and vaccination, but it helps flocks resist infection and recover faster. The most important nutrients are vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium, electrolytes, and immune-modulating compounds like beta-glucans. In lower-pathogenicity AI situations, proper nutritional support can significantly reduce mortality and shorten recovery time.
