Blackhead Disease in Poultry: Supplement Protocols for Prevention
Blackhead disease (histomoniasis) is a significant problem in turkeys and occasionally in chickens. The disease is caused by Histomonas meleagridis, a protozoan parasite transmitted through cecal worm eggs. With the ban on effective treatments in many countries, nutritional prevention has become more important.
Understanding Blackhead Disease
Blackhead disease primarily affects the ceca and liver. The parasite causes:
- Inflammation and necrosis of the ceca
- Liver necrosis (the characteristic target-shaped lesions)
- Depression, drooping wings, and yellowish droppings
- Mortality can reach 50-80% in untreated turkey flocks
Transmission is through ingestion of cecal worm (Heterakis gallinarum) eggs that contain Histomonas organisms. Earthworms can also carry infected cecal worm eggs.
Why Prevention Is Critical
Effective treatments for blackhead disease have been removed from many markets. The drug nitarsone (Histostat) was withdrawn from the US market in 2015. Other countries have similar restrictions.
Without effective drugs, control relies on:
- Parasite management (breaking the cecal worm cycle)
- Litter management and sanitation
- Nutritional support to strengthen resistance
Nutritional Support Strategies
While no nutrient can cure blackhead, several support the bird’s resistance:
Vitamin A. Essential for cecal epithelial integrity. Adequate vitamin A (12,000-15,000 IU/kg) helps maintain the barrier against parasite invasion.
Vitamin E and selenium. Support immune function and protect liver tissue from damage. I use 80-100 IU/kg vitamin E and 0.3-0.4 ppm selenium in turkey feeds.
Zinc. Supports immune function and tissue repair. At 80-120 ppm.
Probiotics. A healthy gut microbiome competes with pathogenic organisms. Bacillus-based probiotics at 500-1,000 g/ton support beneficial bacteria.
Butyrate. Protected butyrate at 1-2 kg/ton supports cecal health. Butyrate is the primary energy source for cecal cells.
Garlic and herbal compounds. Some studies suggest garlic, oregano oil, and other botanicals have anti-histomonas activity, though the evidence is limited.
Turkey-Specific Considerations
Turkeys are much more susceptible to blackhead than chickens. Adult chickens can carry the organism without showing clinical signs, making them a reservoir for infection.
For turkey operations, I recommend:
- Do NOT house turkeys on ground previously occupied by chickens without thorough cleaning
- Keep turkeys and chickens completely separate
- Control cecal worms with deworming programs
- Use litter management to reduce worm egg survival
- Maintain optimal nutrition to support immune function
Deworming Program
Cecal worm control is the foundation of blackhead prevention:

I use fenbendazole in the feed for 5 days, repeated at 4-6 week intervals, in turkey operations with blackhead history.
Litter Management
Histomonas organisms survive longer in moist litter:
- Keep litter moisture below 25% (ideally 15-20%)
- Stir or till litter regularly to break up capping
- Remove wet spots promptly
- Use adequate ventilation to remove moisture
- Consider built-up litter management with added bedding between flocks
Supplement Protocol for High-Risk Periods
During periods of high blackhead risk (warm weather, following cecal worm exposure):

Early Detection
Early detection improves the chance of containing an outbreak:
- Monitor turkeys for depression and drooping wings
- Check droppings for yellowish or sulfur-colored material
- Post-mortem examination of any dead birds
- Immediate isolation of affected birds
If blackhead is detected, increase nutritional support to maximum levels and consult a veterinarian regarding any available treatment options.
Blackhead disease is a serious threat, particularly for turkey operations. Without effective drug treatments, prevention through parasite control, litter management, and nutritional support is the only viable strategy.
