Butyrate Supplementation in Poultry: Gut Integrity and Performance
Butyrate has gained significant attention in poultry nutrition over the past decade, and for good reason. Unlike other organic acids that simply lower gut pH, butyrate has specific biological effects on gut cells and the immune system.
What Is Butyrate
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid (C4) produced naturally by bacterial fermentation of fiber in the large intestine. It’s the primary energy source for colonocytes (the cells lining the large intestine). In poultry, where the digestive tract is shorter and fermentation is limited, supplemental butyrate can provide benefits that endogenous production does not cover.
Protected vs Unprotected Butyrate
There’s a critical distinction between forms of butyrate for feed application:
Unprotected (free) butyric acid is rapidly absorbed in the upper digestive tract. By the time it reaches the lower small intestine and ceca where most gut health benefits are needed, very little remains. Its strong odor (think rancid butter) also creates palatability issues.
Protected butyrate is coated with a fat or lipid matrix that releases in the lower gut. This is what I use in formulations. The protection allows butyrate to reach the ceca and lower intestine, where it does the most good.
Butyrate salts (sodium butyrate, calcium butyrate) are solid forms with less odor issues. They still release too early in the digestive tract for optimal effect but are better than free butyric acid.
I exclusively use protected (encapsulated) butyrate in my formulations. The unprotected forms are significantly less effective based on both research and field experience.
Mechanisms of Action
Butyrate works through several distinct mechanisms:
Gut cell health. Butyrate is the preferred energy source for intestinal epithelial cells. Adequate butyrate promotes healthy villi growth and tight junction integrity. Longer villi mean better nutrient absorption.
Antimicrobial effect. Butyrate in its undissociated form can enter bacterial cells and disrupt their metabolism. It’s particularly effective against Salmonella and E. coli. The minimum inhibitory concentration is around 25-50 mM for most poultry pathogens.
Immune modulation. Butyrate has been shown to reduce inflammation in the gut by downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. This is important during coccidiosis or necrotic enteritis challenges.
Histone deacetylase inhibition. At the molecular level, butyrate inhibits histone deacetylases, which affects gene expression in gut cells. This mechanism is behind some of butyrate’s longer-term effects on gut development.
Research Data
A meta-analysis of 12 studies with protected butyrate in broiler diets showed:
- Average 2.3 point improvement in feed conversion
- 3.1% higher body weight at market age
- 50% reduction in Salmonella colonization in challenge studies
- 30% reduction in necrotic enteritis lesion scores
In a field trial I participated in, protected butyrate at 1 kg/ton in antibiotic-free broilers resulted in:

The mortality reduction was primarily from fewer necrotic enteritis cases.
Inclusion Rates
For protected butyrate (typically 30-50% butyrate content on a carrier):
- Broiler starter: 1.0-1.5 kg/ton
- Broiler grower: 0.8-1.0 kg/ton
- Broiler finisher: 0.5-0.8 kg/ton
- Layer feed: 0.5-1.0 kg/ton
- During enteritis challenge: 2.0 kg/ton for 7-10 days
I reduce the rate in finisher feeds because the gut is more mature and the ROI is lower. The biggest bang for the buck comes in the starter period when the gut is developing.
Synergy with Other Additives
Butyrate pairs well with several other gut health products:
Probiotics. Butyrate provides energy for beneficial bacteria while probiotics provide the bacteria. The combination works better than either alone.
Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). MCFAs have different antimicrobial targets than butyrate. Together they provide broader coverage against enteric pathogens.
Zinc. Zinc supports intestinal barrier function, and butyrate supports cell health. They complement each other well.
Cost-Benefit
Protected butyrate costs $4-8 per kg depending on the concentration. At 1 kg/ton, that’s $4-8 per ton of feed. The breakeven is about 2-3 points of FCR improvement or a 1% mortality reduction.
In my experience, protected butyrate is most cost-effective in antibiotic-free programs where the baseline mortality risk is higher. In conventional programs with good management, the benefits are smaller but still positive enough to justify use in the starter period.
Practical Notes
Butyrate has a very strong odor even in protected forms. Storage areas should be separate from other feed ingredients to avoid odor absorption.
The feed mill equipment may retain butyrate odor between batches. Running a batch of corn through the system after butyrate production helps flush the smell.
Birds like the taste of butyrate. I’ve actually seen increased feed intake in the first week when using protected butyrate in starter feeds, which is unusual for a feed additive.
