Colitis in Poultry: Supplemental Support for Gut Health Recovery
Colitis (inflammation of the ceca or colon) is a common consequence of enteric infections in poultry. The condition affects nutrient absorption, water balance, and overall health. Nutritional support during and after colitis episodes speeds recovery.
Understanding Colitis
Colitis in poultry typically results from:
- Bacterial infections (Salmonella, E. coli, Clostridium)
- Coccidiosis affecting the ceca
- Dietary issues (high protein, rancid fats, mycotoxins)
- Stress (heat, transport, overcrowding)
Symptoms include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), reduced feed intake, poor growth, and dehydration. In laying flocks, egg production drops.
Immediate Nutritional Response
When colitis is diagnosed:

Provide electrolytes. Diarrhea causes dehydration and electrolyte loss. Water electrolytes at 2 g/liter with additional potassium (0.5 g/liter) support hydration.

Reduce dietary protein. Undigested protein reaching the inflamed ceca worsens the condition. Reduce CP by 1-2% while maintaining essential amino acids.

Add gut-healing nutrients. Specific nutrients support intestinal repair.
Gut-Healing Nutrients
Zinc. Zinc is essential for intestinal cell regeneration. At 100-120 ppm, zinc supports repair of damaged gut epithelium.
Vitamin A. Supports epithelial cell health and differentiation. I increase to 15,000-20,000 IU/kg during recovery.
Glutamine. An amino acid that fuels intestinal cell growth. At 0.5-1.0% of the diet, glutamine speeds gut repair. Unfortunately, feed-grade glutamine is expensive, limiting its use.
Butyrate. Protected butyrate at 2 kg/ton supports cecal cell health and reduces inflammation.
Probiotics. After the acute phase, probiotics help restore the normal gut microbiome. I use Bacillus-based products at 1,000 g/ton for 7-10 days.
Recovery Feeding Protocol
My recovery protocol for colitis:

Preventing Recurrence
After a colitis episode, preventing recurrence requires:
Gut health maintenance. Continue the probiotic at a maintenance level (500 g/ton) for at least 2-3 weeks after recovery.
Dietary review. Identify what caused the colitis. Was it a dietary ingredient? Mycotoxins? Coccidiosis? Address the root cause.
Mycotoxin control. Mycotoxins damage the gut lining and predispose to colitis. Use mycotoxin binders when risk is high.
Litter management. Wet litter contributes to pathogen load. Keep litter dry and clean.
What to Avoid
During colitis recovery, avoid:
- High-protein feeds (more undigested protein reaches the hindgut)
- Rancid fats (oxidized fats cause intestinal inflammation)
- High-fiber ingredients (fiber ferments in the ceca and may worsen gas/bloat)
- Stressful handling or environmental changes
Colitis recovery typically takes 7-14 days with proper nutritional support. The key is supporting gut repair while removing the causative factors.
