Supplements with Strong Evidence

Phytase: The most researched feed enzyme in poultry nutrition. Hundreds of studies confirm that phytase improves phosphorus digestibility by 20-30%, reduces phosphorus excretion, and improves overall mineral utilization. The evidence level is strong.

Bacillus probiotics: Multiple meta-analyses confirm that Bacillus-based probiotics improve feed conversion by 2-4% and reduce mortality by 10-20% in broilers. The evidence is particularly strong for Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis.

Vitamin E and selenium: Extensive research confirms that combined supplementation improves immune function, reduces oxidative stress, and improves meat quality. The evidence for reproductive benefits in breeders is also strong.

Supplements with Limited or Mixed Evidence

High-dose vitamin C: Research shows benefits during heat stress but limited effects under normal conditions. The response is inconsistent.

Common Misconceptions

“More is better”: This is rarely true for feed supplements. Vitamin E above 500 IU/kg shows no additional benefit. Zinc above 150 ppm may actually reduce performance.

“Natural is always better”: Natural sources of vitamins and minerals are not always more effective. Synthetic vitamins are often more stable and consistent than natural sources.
