PQQ in Poultry Feed: A Novel Supplement for Cellular Energy
Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a relatively new compound in poultry nutrition. I first learned about it through the human supplement space, where it’s marketed for mitochondrial health. The poultry research is emerging, and what I’ve seen so far is encouraging.
What Is PQQ
PQQ is a quinone compound that functions as a redox cofactor. Its primary biological role is supporting mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the energy-producing organelles in cells, and PQQ stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis the creation of new mitochondria.
More mitochondria means more energy production per cell. In poultry, this translates to better growth, feed efficiency, and stress tolerance.
Research Status
The majority of PQQ research to date is in rodent and cell culture models. Poultry-specific research is limited but growing:
A 2020 study from China showed that broilers supplemented with PQQ at 0.04-0.08 mg/kg of feed had:
- 3% higher body weight at 42 days
- 2 point improvement in feed conversion
- Higher antioxidant enzyme activity in serum
- Lower mortality under heat stress conditions
The antioxidant effect seems to be particularly significant. PQQ is more stable than vitamin C and more effective at quenching superoxide radicals than vitamin E. Its activity is similar to that of coenzyme Q10.
A 2022 study from the University of Arkansas found that PQQ supplementation at 0.06 mg/kg improved breast meat quality by reducing drip loss and lipid oxidation during storage. The mechanism appears to be better mitochondrial function in the muscle cells, which reduces oxidative damage post-mortem.
Practical Considerations
The effective dose in poultry appears to be in the range of 0.02-0.08 mg/kg of feed. This is extremely low compared to most feed additives. A premix of PQQ would need to be diluted significantly to achieve uniform distribution in the feed.
The cost of PQQ is currently high, approximately $30,000-50,000 per kg for feed-grade material. At an inclusion rate of 0.05 mg/kg, this adds about $1.50-2.50 per ton of feed. While still expensive compared to most additives, it’s manageable at these trace inclusion rates.
Current Applications
Based on the available research and my own limited field testing, PQQ shows the most promise in:
- Heat stress mitigation. The mitochondrial protection effect is most valuable during oxidative stress from high temperatures.
- Antibiotic-free production. The immune-enhancing and antioxidant effects are additive with other gut health strategies.
- Breeder flocks. Improved mitochondrial function in embryos could improve hatchability and chick quality.
I view PQQ as an emerging technology. The research is promising but not yet robust enough for widespread commercial adoption. I’m using it in a few field trials with selected customers who are interested in novel technologies for antibiotic-free production.
Comparison with CoQ10
Both PQQ and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) support mitochondrial function. CoQ10 is more established in both human and animal nutrition. The difference is in the mechanism: CoQ10 is directly involved in electron transport, while PQQ stimulates the growth of new mitochondria.
For poultry applications, CoQ10 at 20-40 mg/kg feed has been studied more extensively than PQQ. The cost per ton for CoQ10 supplementation ($2-4 per ton) is comparable to PQQ at current pricing.
Regulatory Status
PQQ is not currently approved as a feed additive in most major markets. In the US, it has GRAS status for human consumption as a dietary ingredient. In the EU, it’s approved as a novel food ingredient for humans. But neither allows it as an animal feed additive.
This is likely to change as more poultry-specific research is published. But for now, PQQ use in commercial poultry feed is limited to research settings and approved applications.
Looking Ahead
PQQ has genuine potential as a mitochondrial health support compound. The poultry industry is moving toward additives that support performance through metabolic pathways rather than antimicrobial mechanisms. PQQ fits this trend perfectly.
The adoption will depend on (1) regulatory approvals, (2) manufacturing scale-up to reduce costs, and (3) more poultry-specific efficacy data. I expect to see commercial availability in some markets within 3-5 years.
