Types of Poultry Feed Supplements: Classification and Standards

The world of poultry feed supplements encompasses hundreds of products serving different functions. Having a systematic way to classify them helps producers understand what they’re buying and why.

Classification by Function

Complete diets (not supplements, but this category needs mentioning) contain all the nutrients a bird needs. They don’t require additional supplementation under normal conditions.

Complementary feeds are designed to be fed alongside other feeds. They provide nutrients not present in the base ingredient.

Premixes are concentrated mixtures of vitamins, minerals, and sometimes additional additives. They’re added to feed at low rates (0.5-5%).

Basemixes are premixes that include calcium, phosphorus, salt, and sometimes protein sources. They’re added at higher rates (10-30%).

Concentrates contain protein, minerals, and additives. They’re mixed with grain to produce a complete feed.

Supplement blocks are solid blocks containing nutrients and sometimes medications. Birds consume them on a free-choice basis.

Classification by Nutrient Type

Vitamin supplements. Provide one or more vitamins. Categories:

  • Fat-soluble: A, D3, E, K
  • Water-soluble: B-complex, C
  • Single vitamin: e.g., vitamin E concentrate
  • B-complex mixtures: combinations of B vitamins

Mineral supplements. Provide macro or trace minerals:

  • Macro minerals: calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride
  • Trace minerals: zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, iodine, iron
  • Single mineral: e.g., zinc oxide
  • Mineral mixtures: combinations of minerals

Amino acid supplements. Provide essential amino acids:

  • DL-methionine (99%)
  • L-lysine HCl (78% lysine)
  • L-threonine (98%)
  • L-valine (96%)
  • Tryptophan (98%)

Energy supplements. Provide concentrated energy:

  • Fats and oils (vegetable, animal, blends)
  • Molasses
  • Glucose

Classification by Additive Type

Technological additives:

  • Preservatives (propionic acid, calcium propionate)
  • Antioxidants (ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, natural antioxidants)
  • Emulsifiers (lecithin)
  • Binders (lignosulfonate, bentonite)
  • pH regulators (acids, bases)

Sensory additives:

  • Flavors (vanilla, garlic, sweeteners)
  • Colorants (carotenoids, pigments)

Nutritional additives:

  • Vitamins, minerals, amino acids (as above)
  • Enzymes (phytase, xylanase, beta-glucanase, protease)
  • Probiotics

Zootechnical additives:

  • Digestibility enhancers (enzymes)
  • Gut flora stabilizers (probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids)
  • Substances for stress reduction (electrolytes, vitamin C)
  • Other performance enhancers (betaine, carnitine, GAA)

Coccidiostats and histomonostats. These are veterinary products.

International Standards

Several organizations set standards for feed supplements:

AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) publishes official definitions and ingredient standards used in the United States. The AAFCO Official Publication is the standard reference.

FEDIOL sets standards for feed materials in Europe.

ISO standards for quality management (ISO 9001) and food safety (ISO 22000).

FAMI-QS is the European quality and safety standard specifically for feed additives and premixes.

Codex Alimentarius publishes international standards under the FAO/WHO framework.

Label Requirements

A proper supplement label should include:

  • Product name and brand
  • Net weight
  • Guaranteed analysis (minimum or maximum levels of key nutrients)
  • Ingredients list (descending order by weight)
  • Directions for use
  • Warning statements (if applicable)
  • Manufacturer name and address
  • Batch/lot number
  • Manufacture date and expiration date

Classification by Form

  • Powder (most common for premixes)
  • Granular (better flow characteristics)
  • Pelleted (mixed into pelleted feeds)
  • Liquid (water-soluble, spray-on)
  • Paste (oral administration)
  • Block (free-choice consumption)
  • Tablet (individual treatment)

Choosing the Right Type

Selecting the right supplement type depends on:

  • What nutrient or effect you’re trying to achieve
  • The age and type of bird
  • Your feeding system
  • Your budget
  • Local availability and regulation
