How to Make Poultry Supplements from Common Ingredients

While I generally recommend buying supplements from reputable manufacturers, there are situations where farmers or feed mills want to produce their own supplements. This is most common in remote areas where commercial supplements are expensive or unavailable. I’ve helped several operations develop on-site supplement production for emergency or cost-saving purposes.

What You Can and Cannot Make

You can make:

  • Simple mineral mixes (limestone + dicalcium phosphate + salt)
  • Basic vitamin premixes from individual vitamin ingredients
  • Electrolyte mixes (salt, potassium chloride, baking soda)
  • Herbal and botanical blends
  • Calcium supplements (oyster shell, limestone)
  • Simple probiotic mixes (yogurt or fermented products)

You should NOT make:

  • Complex multi-vitamin premixes with accurate micronutrient levels
  • Chelated mineral products
  • Enzymes (they require commercial production)
  • Stabilized vitamin products (the coating technology is proprietary)
  • Medicated supplements (these require regulatory compliance)
  • Probiotic products with specific bacterial strains

Basic Electrolyte Mix

The simplest and most useful supplement to make is an electrolyte mix:

IngredientAmount (per kg)Source
Sodium chloride (salt)400 gGrocery store / feed store
Potassium chloride300 gFeed store / online
Sodium bicarbonate200 gGrocery store (baking soda)
Magnesium sulfate100 gFeed store / pharmacy

Mix thoroughly and store in an airtight container. Use at 2-3 grams per liter of drinking water during stress periods.

Cost: approximately $0.50-1.00 per kg vs $3-8 per kg for commercial products.

Simple Mineral Mix

For a basic mineral supplement:

IngredientAmount (per ton of feed)Purpose
Dicalcium phosphate10-15 kgCalcium and phosphorus
Limestone8-12 kgCalcium
Salt3-4 kgSodium and chloride
Trace mineral premix0.5-1 kgZinc, copper, manganese

The trace mineral premix must be purchased because individual trace mineral ingredients are needed in very small amounts and require precise mixing.

Herbal Gut Health Blend

A simple herbal mix for gut health support:

IngredientAmount (per kg)Function
Garlic powder400 gAntimicrobial
Oregano leaves (dried, ground)300 gAntimicrobial
Cinnamon powder200 gAnti-inflammatory
Turmeric powder100 gAnti-inflammatory
Black pepper50 gAbsorption enhancer

Mix thoroughly. Add at 1-2 kg per ton of feed for general gut health support, or up to 5 kg per ton for short therapeutic periods.

Cost: approximately $2-4 per kg vs $8-15 per kg for commercial phytogenic products.

Mixing Considerations

When making supplements on-site:

Uniform mixing. Small batches can be mixed by hand in a clean container. For larger batches, use a concrete mixer or dedicated feed mixer. Mixing time should be at least 5-10 minutes for uniform distribution.

Particle size matching. All ingredients should have similar particle sizes to prevent segregation.

Moisture control. Keep all ingredients dry. Moisture causes caking and microbial growth.

Storage. Store in airtight containers, labeled with ingredients and date, in a cool dry place. Use within 3 months.

Limitations

Homemade supplements have real limitations:

  • No quality control. You cannot accurately test the nutrient levels.
  • Limited shelf life. Without stabilized forms, vitamins degrade faster.
  • No overages. Commercial manufacturers add 10-20% overage for storage losses.
  • Variable potency. Natural ingredients vary in active compound content.
  • Inconsistent mixing. Hand mixing rarely achieves the uniformity of commercial equipment.

When to Buy vs Make

Make your own when:

  • Commercial products are unavailable or very expensive
  • You need a simple product like electrolytes or calcium
  • You want to experiment with herbal blends
  • You need emergency supplementation immediately

Buy commercial when:

  • You need precise, consistent nutrient levels
  • The product contains sensitive ingredients (vitamins, enzymes, probiotics)
  • Regulatory compliance requires labeled nutrient guarantees
  • The product requires specialized manufacturing (coating, encapsulation)

I’ve seen both approaches work. The key is knowing which products benefit from commercial manufacturing and which can be safely and economically produced on-site.
