Poultry Electrolyte for Transport and Processing Recovery
Transport and processing are among the most stressful events in a bird’s life. Catching, crating, transport, and holding at the processing plant all contribute to physiological stress. Electrolyte supplementation before and after these events can reduce losses and improve meat quality.
The Stress of Transport
During transport, birds experience:
- Motion stress and vibration
- Temperature extremes (especially heat in summer)
- Food and water deprivation (typically 8-12 hours)
- Crowding and social stress
- Fear and handling stress
The physiological response includes elevated corticosterone, heart rate, and body temperature. Birds lose weight through defecation and dehydration. The total body weight loss during transport is typically 2-4%.
In hot weather, transport mortality can reach 0.5-1.0% in extreme cases. Electrolyte supplementation before transport reduces this mortality significantly.
Pre-Transport Supplementation

Processing Plant Holding
Birds may wait 2-6 hours at the processing plant before slaughter. This waiting period, especially in summer heat, can cause additional stress and mortality. The plant holding area should have fans for ventilation and, where possible, misting systems for evaporative cooling.
Post-Processing Meat Quality
Electrolyte supplementation before transport can also improve meat quality. Stressed birds produce meat with:
- Higher ultimate pH (darker, firmer meat)
- Reduced drip loss
- Better water-holding capacity
- Improved tenderness
