Poultry Vitamin Supplement Packaging: Stability and Shelf Life

Vitamin stability in feed is a topic that does not get enough attention from poultry producers. I’ve tested premixes that were perfectly formulated but had lost 40% of their vitamin activity before the bird ever ate them. The packaging and storage conditions make a huge difference.

What Causes Vitamin Loss

Vitamins degrade through several mechanisms:

Oxidation. Vitamins A, D3, E, and C are particularly susceptible. Oxygen in the storage environment reacts with these vitamins, breaking them down. The rate doubles for every 10°C increase in temperature.

Moisture. Moisture accelerates chemical reactions. It also promotes microbial growth that can consume vitamins. Most vitamin premixes should be stored below 10% relative humidity in the immediate storage environment.

Heat. Heat is the enemy of vitamin stability. At 25°C, vitamin A loses about 5% activity per month. At 35°C, the loss increases to 15-20% per month.

Light. Ultraviolet light degrades vitamins. Riboflavin (B2) and vitamin A are particularly light-sensitive. Premixes should be stored in opaque containers.

pH. Acidic or alkaline environments can degrade vitamins. The optimal pH range is 5.5-7.0.

Mineral interactions. Trace minerals (especially copper, iron, and zinc) catalyze vitamin destruction. This is the main reason vitamin premixes and mineral premixes should not be stored together.

The packaging choice directly affects vitamin stability:

For most operations, plastic-lined paper bags provide adequate protection if the storage environment is controlled. For tropical or humid environments, foil-lined bags or vacuum sealing are worth the extra cost.

Bulk Storage Considerations

Many large feed mills receive vitamins in bulk bags or totes. Bulk storage introduces additional stability concerns:

  • Condensation inside the storage container (temperature fluctuations cause this)
  • Inconsistent temperature throughout the bin (edges are warmer or cooler than the center)
  • Longer exposure to oxygen (larger volume-to-surface ratio helps, but the product is exposed longer)

I recommend bulk vitamin storage for no more than 3 months in temperate climates and 2 months in tropical climates. Beyond that, the degradation is too high.

The Premix Problem

Vitamin premixes are particularly vulnerable because they combine many vitamins with trace minerals that catalyze degradation. A typical premix stored at 25°C for 6 months might have:

For vitamin A alone, a premix that was formulated at 10,000 IU/g might only test at 6,000-7,500 IU/g after 6 months of storage.

My rule of thumb: if you’re using a premix that is more than 3 months old, add 15-20% additional premix to compensate for expected losses. Or better yet, ask your premix supplier to adjust the formulation with stability overages.

Good Manufacturing Practices

Simple practices that extend vitamin stability:

  • Store premixes in a cool room (<20°C if possible)
  • Keep the storage area dry (humidity under 60%)
  • Seal bags after each use (or use entire bag at once)
  • Rotate stock (first-in, first-out)
  • Do not store premixes near heat sources or in direct sunlight
  • Use premixes within 3 months of delivery for best results

Testing Your Premix

I recommend testing premix vitamin levels annually. Send a sample to a certified laboratory and request analysis of the key vitamins (A, D3, E, and B2 or B12 as stability markers). The cost is about $200-500 per test but can save thousands in wasted supplement.

If the tested levels are below 80% of specification, the premix is not delivering what you’re paying for. Review the storage conditions and the premix age.

Final Word

Vitamin stability is a significant technical issue in poultry feeding. The best formulation in the world is useless if the vitamins degrade before they reach the bird. I treat premix storage with the same attention as feed formulation and get measurable results from doing so.
