Poultry Feed Supplements for Winter Months: Adjusting the Formula

Winter feeding presents unique challenges for poultry producers. Cold temperatures increase the bird’s energy requirements for maintenance, leaving less energy for growth or egg production. The right supplement adjustments help birds cope with cold stress efficiently.

The Physiology of Cold Stress

When ambient temperature drops below the bird’s thermoneutral zone (approximately 18-22°C for adult birds), the metabolic rate increases to generate body heat. For every 1°C below the thermoneutral zone, the bird’s energy requirement increases by about 1-2%.

At 0°C, a laying hen needs roughly 25% more energy than at 20°C just to maintain body temperature. This extra energy must come from feed because the bird has limited body reserves.

Energy Adjustments

The most important winter adjustment is increasing dietary energy. I add 50-100 kcal/kg to winter formulations. The easiest way is to add 1-2% feed-grade fat or oil.

Animal fat or vegetable oil at 1% of the diet provides approximately 85 kcal/kg of additional energy. I use a 50:50 blend of poultry fat and soybean oil for cost-effectiveness and essential fatty acid content.

Vitamin and Mineral Adjustments

Winter also affects vitamin and mineral requirements:

Vitamin E supports immune function during cold stress. I increase to 60-80 IU/kg in winter formulations.

Vitamin C supplementation at 100-200 ppm in water helps birds cope with cold stress, just as it helps with heat stress. The mechanism is the same: reduced cortisol response.

Electrolytes need adjustment. In winter, birds drink less water, so water-soluble supplementation is less effective. I ensure winter feeds have adequate electrolyte levels (DEB 250-280 mEq/kg) through feed adjustments.

Layer Feed Adjustments

For laying hens in winter:

  • Increase energy by 75-100 kcal/kg
  • Maintain 3.5-4.0% calcium (egg production should not decline if energy is adequate)
  • Keep available phosphorus at 0.40-0.42%
  • Maintain methionine at 0.38-0.42%

Layer hens often drop production during winter cold snaps. In most cases, the drop is due to insufficient energy intake, not a deficiency of laying-specific nutrients. Increasing energy density usually restores egg production within 2-3 weeks.

Broiler Winter Strategies

For broilers in winter:

  • Increase starter energy by 50-75 kcal/kg
  • Increase finisher energy by 50 kcal/kg
  • Keep amino acid levels the same (they should be adequate if energy is high enough)
  • Ensure adequate ventilation (producers often reduce ventilation in winter, which causes respiratory issues)

The biggest winter problem in broiler houses is ammonia. Reduced ventilation to conserve heat leads to high ammonia levels, which damage the respiratory tract and reduce growth. Keeping ammonia below 10 ppm is critical.

Water Management

Birds drink less in winter: roughly 20-30% less than summer intake. This affects water-soluble supplementation. If you use water-soluble vitamins or electrolytes in winter, increase the concentration to compensate for lower water intake.

Water temperature matters too. Birds prefer water at 10-15°C. Freezing water lines are a real problem. Heated waterers or frequent fresh water delivery is necessary in very cold conditions.

The return on this investment comes from maintained growth and production during cold weather. Without these adjustments, performance typically drops 5-10% in winter.

What Not to Change

Some nutrients should NOT be changed in winter:

  • Calcium levels (layers still need 3.5-4.0%)
  • Protein levels (increasing protein for “warmth” is a myth; excess protein requires energy to metabolize)
  • Trace mineral levels (requirements don’t change significantly)
  • Phosphorus levels (maintain standard levels)

Winter feeding is about managing energy first and everything else second. When the energy balance is right, the other nutrients follow.
